Hands-On: The New Audemars Piguet Royal Oak 16202 ‘Jumbo’ 50th Anniversary Watches

Size Does Matter

Milestones are always meant for celebration and there is no exception for the amazing 50th Anniversary of the Audemars Piquet Royal Oak.  In honor of this prestigious collection, the brand has released updates across the collection and one of the most desirable is the Royal Oak 16202 ‘Jumbo’.  This original watch is one of those treasures that are not only beautiful but also very rare.  The octagonal bezel makes it easily recognizable and truly a favorite for horological lovers.

More is Perfect

Introducing four new versions of the Royal Oak 16202 ‘Jumbo’ Audemars Piguet delivers exquisite timepieces.  Each of these beautiful watches shows excellence from the brand:  The steel case with coordinating steel bracelet featuring Bleu Nuit, a special 50th Anniversary dial;  the yellow gold case with yellow gold bracelet has a elegant smoked gold dial; a stunning pink gold case with matching bracelet is created with a smoked gray dial; and the one that is getting the most discussion is the platinum case with matching platinum bracelet designed with a smoked green dial.  There is something for everyone no matter if you are a tried and true traditionalist or like something a little more edgy.

Change Embraces Tradition

While those familiar with the brand 15202 will not recognize any earth shattering differences, there are subtle changes that help modernize the watch while holding firm to classic tradition.  The upgrade to the Calibre 7121 movement was substantial in many ways.  It is slightly larger and thicker at 29.6mm wide and 3.2mm thick, and has 268 components compared to the original 247.  So you get much more power with only a small increase in the size.  Featuring a 55 hour power reserve and quick set date function the hand finishing on the movement is detailed and delightful.  The 50th anniversary Royal Oaks are equipped with special rotors which will eventually be switched out for standard production at year end. The dials are crafted with intense attention to detail, especially creating that blue dial so it is the exact same as prior.  The gold and gray dials use the galvanic bath method, spraying colored varnish on the outer edges until they reach the desired effects.  The dials are very detailed and if you take the time to inspect you will see how they blend with hour markers, hands and of course the brand insignia.  Audemar Piguet should be extremely proud of these beauties, as the 50th Anniversary Royal Oaks are a tribute to quality and perfection that will stand the test of time.
