A. Lange & Sohne have been crafting watches for 27 years and perpetual calendar watches for at least 20 of those years. Each of these timepiece designs were paired with high complications and this new Lange 1 Perpetual Calendar is just a simple version, paired down and yet absolutely perfect. While it is a creative take on a previous model, it is simply new perfection of ideas that keep horological brilliance moving forward.
The architecture for the new Lange 1 Perpetual is complemented by the QP display, and of course featuring the brand signature big date feature. On this design the day of the week has taken the place of the retrograde power reserve and the month is displayed on a ring that circles the dial’s outer edge. You have the option to add a combination moon-phase and day/night indicator in the seconds sub-dial. So A. Lange & Sohne has delivered a watch that provides a ton of information with legibility but brilliant beauty in the same timepiece. At the heart of this simple but exquisite watch is the caliber L021.3, based on the original L021.1 that resides in the Lange 1 Daymatic, and then of course putting the perpetual calendar works in for a bonus.
The A. Lange & Sohne Lange 1 Perpetual Calendar was launched with two color options, a striking pink-gold model that is created with a dark grey dial. The combination is really nice and while the brand has used it on prior timepieces it is quite elegant and fitting for this design. The second design is a limited edition model in white gold, and crafted with a solid pink-gold dial which is spectacular. There are only 150 numbered pieces of this version, and certainly they will not be around for long. The two color combinations that are presented are excellent for the brand and bring a creative balance for the folks looking for a traditional but contemporary watch. They both should age well, although the pink on white is somewhat trendy.
True To Oneself
Both of these watches offer beauty, and complication. The A. Lange & Sohne Lange 1 Perpetual Calendar timepieces might seem simple to many folks, but the horological world respects the subtle game changers that are inherent in the brand designs. Some examples, the calendar indications that jump instantaneously. The lovely moon-phase and day/night indicator which adds that touch to the technical side of the timepieces. The dimensions on these watches are pretty amazing, sitting just under 42mm and only 12mm thick, allowing for extreme comfort when wearing the watches and really brilliant knowing what is packed inside. Another brilliant aspect of these timepieces is the new winding system, using a platinum weight at the rotor’s outer edge providing more efficiency and less overall wear and tear. They are truly magnificent timepieces that might look simple, but are simply perfect.
