When Ulysse Nardin introduced silicon parts in high end watch making, in lieu of metal parts, the industry was shocked, and yet it was evolution in the making. The latest timepiece introduced to the Freak S watch collection is another brilliant piece. The brand certainly turned the traditional watch industry on end when the collection started and brought about debate on this new material, yet here we are 21 years later and the wow continues. The Freak collection has a place now in the brand and elevates the design and visual aspects of timepieces, there is more than just technical performance, so enjoy the fun and excitement with the new hands-on Ulysse Nardin Freak S Watch.
This new timepiece is futuristic and full of visual animation which is the entire premise of the Freak S collection and inspiration. The brand embraces the minute hand on the dial looking like a spaceship and the modern design of the case shows contemporary aspects and a forward thinking team to drive the future. The technical nature of the Ulysse Nardin Freak S watch is not a toy, the novel dual silicon balance system uses a vertical differential system, allowing for the movement to have two time regulations systems instead of just one. The performances are averaged out on them in order to reduce rate errors. The goal is ultimately to increase accuracy over time. The brand doesn’t promote technical attributes on this timepiece over other timepieces, but it does perform well and has excellent technique.
Beating inside the heart of the Freak S is in-house caliber UN-251 automatic, with the two balance systems operating at a frequency of 2.5Hz, providing a simple elegance for the watch, and an overall power reserve of 72 hours. The Ulysse Nardin Freak watches have no crown, time is adjusted by turning the top bezel, which unlocks after lifting the small tab located at the 6 o’clock market position. If you want to manually wind the mainspring, you turn the case back crown. However this timepiece is the second in the collection to feature automatic winding. Using a system the brand calls grinder. It is quite interesting to those horological folks who want to know the details. The watch dial is more of a three dimensional mechanical sculpture that is housed in a very exquisite 45mm wide case that is water resistant up to 30 meters. Currently the timepiece is only available in black, produced from 18k rose gold and black DLC-coated titanium, finished with a two tone black alligator and calf leather strap, with a hint of gold tone showing through the vertical line of horizontal cut perforations. With only 75 pieces to be produced the Ulysse Nardin Freak S watch is something to keep your eye on.
