Tracing the process back to Gallo-Roman times, the enamel is a glass comprising silica, comprised of red lead and potash.  During the glazing part of the process, there are elements used as stabilizing agents, lime or magnesium normally, and they are mixed with the silica, then potassium sodium is added to keep the melting point low, and different colors are created using metallic oxides.  The brand crafted a variety of colors, as well as transparent, opaque, and translucent pieces, each having a secret formula for their exact composition.  This technique has been used through history by high-end watch makers, creating a high demand by true collectors.
