With one giant step for mankind, Buzz Aldrin took the epic walk on the moon in 1969 and on his wrist was the Omega Speedmaster collection timepiece that is now dubbed the Moonwatch. Taking its place in the history of watchmaking and in the U.S. space program, the timepiece played a vital part in all six lunar landings.
The timepieces are now an integral part of the brand legacy and through innovation and design strides, the new chronographs feature the in-house automatic movements and advanced technology. The sport look still allows for the classic elegance of the originals but with a luxurious feel and now offers a ladies collection that is simply beautiful. The choices within the series continue to grow and if you like the look, the affordability allows for you to get one of each for your collection.
The series celebrated a 40th anniversary in 1997 with a special rare collection of Moon Mission watches, paying tribute to the original timepieces. There were 23 Omega Speedmaster watches designed in a case with genuine spacesuit cloth, and a special series of 22 stainless steel watches each with their very own official NASA mission patch displayed on the dial at the 9 o’clock position. The missions represented started with the August 1965 Gemini V and carried through to the November 1973 Skylap SL-4 mission. The collection also featured a replica of the original 1957 timepiece.
In addition to the timepieces space adventures, the brand has crossed into many sporting areas with the collections. Michael Schumacher, Formula 1 driver, has been a brand ambassador since 1995 and has added five consecutive world championship drivers titles to his two previous ones, which is why the special limited edition chronographs were developed. The Legend series features three Omega Speedmaster chronographs that combine the excellence in movement with the racing sport with Formula 1 inspired dials.
With an eighth world championship up for grabs, the record holder still chooses the brand for his timekeeping, and they respect the high level of achievement. In honor of that unsurpassed excellence, they have launched not just one watch, but a complete series to capture the total accomplishment. The timepieces are set in a 42mm case, all stainless steel, featuring the scratch-resistant anti-reflective sapphire crystal.
The special series is equipped with the exclusive brand caliber 3301 self-winding chronograph movement and is an officially certified COSC chronometer. The power reserve is a lengthy 55 hours and there are striking black dials with silver subdials, silver dial with two-tone silver subdials, and more. The name of the watch is defined in red, a brilliant signal that shines bright, signifying the quality and precision that lies beneath.
