In the context of a spectacular event that took place at the largest aquarium site in world – the Dubai Aquarium & Underwater Zoo in the Dubai Mall, the luxury timepiece manufacturer, Blancpain revealed its latest diving watch. The watch that was revealed in October 2011 is called X Fathoms and revisits the characteristics of its iconic 1953 ancestor, and combines them with a mechanical depth gauge to create the most high-performance mechanical stylish, diving watch ever manufactured.
The X Fathoms combines elements of its well known ancestor – the stylish watch Fifty Fathoms. X Fathoms comes with a modern mechanical depth gauge and several new features. This is what Blancpain calls the most high-performance mechanical stylish diving watch ever made.
Blancpain has listed these features for the first time in this stylish watch used for diving activities:
- Measured diving depth up to 90 meters
- Maximum depth reached memory
- Segregated indication on the 0-15m scale with an +/- 30 cm precision
- Retrograde 5-minute counter for decompression stops
The movement of the X Fathoms is on similar lines as that of the Caliber 1315, manufactured by Blancpain, which has already lived up to its reputation by powering several Fifty Fathoms models. The self winding movement of this stylish diving watch comprises three barrels that endow it with a five-day power reserve. There also is a silicon balance-spring to endure magnetic disturbances. The impressive 55.65mm case, which is also water-resistant to 30 bar or 300 meters, is made from satin-brushed titanium. Another striking aspect of the X Fathoms is its a helium decompression valve, which renders this stylish diving watch just apt for saturation diving and typical unidirectional rotating bezel.
As per Blancpain, it selected an amorphous metal for the depth gauge membrane as research proved the material’s elastic properties and resistance to permanent deformation. This makes it ideal for the application. Also, the long-term stability of amorphous metal avoids the risk of micro crack formation. The non-linear nature of the membrane deformation was addressed by the asymmetrical toothing of the rack and pinion that linearizes the curve of the membrane deformation. According to Blancpain, the individual calibration of each X Fathoms guarantees maximum precision of depth indications.
