Meeting the Challenge
Certainly a well-known name, Rolex. A brand that is respected, a brand that stands for value, precision, and excellence. So it is no surprise that the diamond-set Cosmograph Daytona 116588TBR would be so spectacular. However it was quite surprising that this timepiece was so unexpected in design and brilliance. The brand presenting a Daytona with diamonds is not new, but this one, well, it is certainly unique to say the least. The dial on this stunning watch is just breathtaking. From the black lacquer to the exquisite 18k yellow-gold and diamond encrusted waves, the surface of the dial is reminiscent of a tiger’s fur. Each index has set diamonds, and 18k yellow- gold hour markers with the exception of the 3, 6, and 9 positions, which have been cleverly designed with 18k yellow-gold Arabic numerals. The bezel of the timepiece has been gem-set and while the 40-mm case is pure perfection, complete with 18k yellow-gold crown and pushers, it is not complete without the Rolex Oysterflex strap also fashioned in 18k yellow-gold. A self-winding watch that is more than a reflection of the brand.
More Than A Name
The very prestigious brand has built a reputation that many only dream of. The technical ability that goes into these timepieces shows magnificence beyond comparison, and no matter if you are a watch collector, a horological expert or a competitor, it is clear that this brand has worked diligently to be at the top of their game. Engineering and manufacturing complexity combine with creativity in design and come together for high-end watch creation. Everyone takes notice of performance and design, people want aesthetic beauty but also want affordable excellence. Rolex has taken this Daytona 116588TBR ‘Eye of the Tiger’ and made a very striking timepiece and while some will love it, others will think it is ridiculously flashy. Personal taste always impacts design and desire.

The song that speaks of ‘Eye of the Tiger’ certainly conveys the message the timepiece itself has delivered. The thrill of the fight, rising up to the challenge of the rival and certainly that we are being watched by the eye of the tiger. While the timepiece might seem mysterious and striking, it really just beats with the same heart as all the other masterpieces this brand has crafted. The difference perhaps was in the creative nature of the design and the bezel that has 36 trapeze-cut diamonds, sitting atop a black lacquer dial. The in-house movement calibre 4130 is a staple in a number of other timepieces, the Oyster case and bracelet sit on many of the brand designs, and so is this timepiece really that different? How many watches display trapeze-cut diamond bezels, or even baguettes for that matter? Dazzling and daring are words that can describe the Roles Daytona 116588TBR ‘Eye of the Tiger’, but reliable, engineered with brilliance, precise and always crafted with meticulous detail, those are how we describe the brand. While this design might be a new dimension for the brand, a way for them to try something new, with the heart of the same champion. Sometimes it is good to branch out a bit, take a new look, create a bit more of a concept that has not been explored, and yet when you are such a prestigious brand everyone expects you to wear the same crown.
