No Longer Made: Audemars Piguet Royal Oak Offshore Arnold Schwarzenegger The Legacy Watch Hands-On
In 2011 Audemars Piguet, a renowned Swiss watch maker, released a limited-edition timepiece to honor celebrity Arnold Schwarzenegger. The actor was an avid watch collector. The Audemars Piquet Oak Offshore The Legacy is a limited edition, 1500 pieces, and designed to fit large wrists. The watch was also engraved on the backside with ‘The Legacy’. While this timepiece was not the first the brand had designed for the celebrity, it is one of the most sought after. The brand produced a prop watch in the late 1990’s for the film End of Days which was worn by the star. This prop was not a working model, but because of its popularity they ended up producing a limited edition series. The End of Days timepieces had a black and yellow color theme and were followed by other limited-edition watches for other films that Schwarzenegger starred in.
What Makes A Legacy
The first time you take a Royal Oak Offshore The Legacy in your hand, you immediately notice the size of the timepiece. The 48mm wide watch once you consider the crown and pushers wears more like a 55mm watch. Anyone who wears the timepiece will see the size of the strap and clearly have a much better concept of the celebrity this was designed for. The brand wanted to satisfy the need for the star, but also anyone else who had similar anatomy. The design was indeed for a specific group and also very simple and elegant. Previous designs by the brand were more elaborate and technical, but the feel of this one is macho and classy.
The Look
The Audemars Piguet Royal Oak Offshore Arnold Schwarzenegger The Legacy Watch is striking from the first look. The matte rose-gold tones coupled with the green, gray and black work together for that elegant and classy style. The black/gray ceramic case is masculine, and of course the 48mm size is dynamic. Titanium elements provide for an impressive look. Surrounding the brilliance is the black ceramic bezel, 18k rose gold chrono pushers and crown insert, as well as the titanium crown and pusher guards, matching the 44mm Royal Oak Offshores.
Legacy Dial
The dial on this timepiece is spectacular. The timepiece features a black anthracite dial with Mega Tapisserie pattern. The beautiful rose gold surrounds with black counters, and rose gold appllied Arabic numerals are striking. The hands on The Legacy are rose gold with luminescent coating and rose gold colored tachymetric scale flange. Audemars Piguet provided this color combination that gives contrast to provide the sport style, but exquisite beauty as well.
Movement and Finishing Touches
The power of this timepiece is established by the 50-jewel automatic calibre 2326/2840 sporting a 38 hour power reserve. A solid titanium case back showcases the engraved ‘Legacy’ and makes the mark for all to remember. Kevlar aramide fiber strap finishes the watch and has the titanium pin buckle for closure. There was also a black alligator strap initially sold with the timepiece or those dressier occasions.
The True Legacy
The brand produced the Royal Oak Offshore The Legacy without a movie, or a reason, simply to honor Arnold Schwarzenegger. Also another fact that many might not know is that a portion of each sale was donated to the actors charity, After School All-Stars. Certainly there is a history for this watch, which is what makes it a true Legacy.
