Rolex Deepsea Sea-Dweller D-Blue Watch for James Cameron

As unique as the brand itself, the new Rolex Deepsea Sea-Dweller D-Blue Watch gets introduced outside the normal Baselworld schedule, and has been dedicated to James Cameron. Recognizing his successful descent to the deepest point on the planet, and in conjunction with the upcoming film release, the amazing timepiece will take its place as a testament to amazing.

The brilliant blue and black gradient dial coupled with the vibrant green colored “DEEPSEA” text on the dial is striking and clever. The label represents the decent submersible of the same color and commemorates the many scientific finds the expedition is responsible for. There seems to always be a brand timepiece on board with the diving challenges, and is is no surprise that this latest tribute would be announced.

Rolex has a very diverse history of creating waterproof watches, the first release was the Oyster in 1926 and over 30 years later the Submariner, which has been one of the most widely respected diver’s watches ever created. In1960 the Deep Sea Special took the first dive of 10,900 meters below the surface with two men and their submersible known as the Trieste.

Here we are 42 years later and James Cameron took another timepiece to the depths of the ocean, this time strapped to the robotic arm of the Challenger, making history once again, and leading to this new release that stands as a tribute and the next accomplishment for the brand. The original timepiece was never produced commercially, so this Deepsea Sea-Dweller is quite exciting for the brand as well as those who have been waiting for such a magnificent watch.

This new Rolex has some truly exquisite design elements, starting with the blue dial that gradually transforms to a deep black, imitating the journey that the submersible took to the deepest place on Earth. The timepiece features a 44 mm wide steel case, with 17.7mm thickness, which is somewhat small in comparison to the one Cameron wore, but very distinct in design and being water resistant to 3,900 meters (12,800 feet) is just remarkable. A must have for any collector of dive timepieces, but a great one for any horological lover.
