Founded in 1868, IWC founder Florentine Ariosto Jones, worked tirelessly to develop a solid reputation of horologically superior watches. The brand from Schaffhausen, Switzerland will mark 150 year anniversary in 2018 and the latin motto, “Probus Scafusia” translates to “good craftmanship” is the heart of the brand. Celebrating the anniversary, the company is unveiling two tourbillon timepieces which will showcase the expertise the brand has about workmanship and complications.
The IWC Portugieser ‘150 Years’ Tourbillon Watch is a grand step for the brand, marking the first time they have combined a perpetual calendar with a tourbillon on the dial. The design is showcased with a 45mm wide case, that has the distinctive short and curved lugs and of course the brand chunky knurled crown. The finishing touch on the timepiece is a black Santoni aligator strap and is water resistant to 30m, and features a white dial that has a lacquered finish with large black Arabic numerals that are printed in the brand signature font.
The timepiece is crafted with sizable heat-treated and leaf-shaped hour and minute hands and a railroad style minutes track that makes all easily readable. The sub-dial that indicates the day sits at 9 o’clock and other sub-dials at 3 o’clock show date and power reserve. The month indicator and moon phase display is set at 6 o’clock, with the year indicator just to the left at 8 o’clock. The flying tourbillon makes a single rotation every minute at 12 o’clock and the movement within is the self-winding brand caliber 51950, which is created from the 51900 that is in the other similar timepieces.
The Constant-Force, an IWC Portugieser ‘150 Years’ Tourbillon Watch is one timepiece highlighted for the anniversery, and is a 46mm case and available only in platinum. This timepiece features an inlaid insignia that celebrates the special occasion and the pieces are only being produced in 50 pieces each.
