Past - Present - Future
Omega has long been recognized for the classic hand wound Speedmaster Professional Moonwatch, but long before this timepiece was even created, the brand produced a chronograph series that was more detailed and ornate, the Chronoscope. The brand name was then Louis Brandt, and this original timepiece developed in 1885 was a staple for them for over a decade. While the Chronoscope and the Speedmaster were never joined previously, the brand has now blended these successful series and combine the two into one.
This new design watch is the future for the brand series with the style taking a new path, and a host of new references that attempt more complexity, and add elegance that brings inspiration to the line.
Heaven In Seven
If the Omega Speedmaster Chronoscope series was not spectacular enough with the technical brilliance, there are seven versions being offered so everyone has choices. The watches are sized at 43mm, sitting in the middle of the two original timepieces, and slightly larger than some other similar pieces but wearable featuring the shorter lug architecture. The timepieces are crafted in stainless steel or the brand proprietary warm Bronze Gold alloy, and a design that is very familiar with the polished case side chamfer, a notched case side that is home to the pillbox crown and wide piston pushers, and twisted lyre lugs. While the new style features an anodized aluminum bezel insert which is available in blue, black or mahogany brown, it also has a much softer look as compared to the tachymeter scale on the Moonwatch. The design is more intricate and features a rounded typeface and a inner highlight ring. All seven references are crafted with sapphire crystals in the front and display back, and water resistant to 50 meters.
Dial In Style
A surprise for these new Omega Speedmaster Chronoscope series watches is the dial designs. Far from the other timepieces in the original series, the design is a 40’s inflected look, with everything having a refined and classical elegance. The signature printed indices do continue around the edge of the dial, and created with rounded Arabic numerals, a azurage accent ring, and stacked bi-complex sub-dials complimented with the polished leaf hands. One of the most striking features of this new design is the triple scales. Sitting just inboard of the sunken azurage hours ring, the dial is carefully designed with the classic suite of tachymeter, telemeter, and pulsometer functions. Each of these elements can be used for measuring so many things, from distance based on speed of sound, to measuring your heart rate. The new dial design is offered in four colors, the stainless models can opt for a deep navy blue sunburst dial, and contrasting silver azurage sub-dials, or silver on silver sunburst with blued dial hardware, or a panda dial option with silver main dial and black sub-dials that also offer striking red and white accents. The bronze gold has been paired with a patina brown color scheme, offering the rich warm brown complementing the bronze PVD hands and indices. The dial scales designed in a light gray tone off white and opaline silver subdials with dark brown markings. All of these are simply striking.
Encased In Power
Omega has powered the Speedmaster Chronoscope with the in-house Calibre 9908, co-axial hand wound chronograph movement. All the brand movements are certified to exact Master Chronometer accuracy. Finishing the three-quarter plate with the brand signature arabesque wave pattern and finalizing the screws and balance wheel with black for a very sharp, modern look. The strap options for the beautiful watches continue to complement the designs. For the Bronze Gold model, it is paired with a simple dark brown leather strap keeping it clean, and elegant. The stainless-steel model offers a striking navy-blue alligator leather strap, or a perforated racing style black leather, or the buyer can choose a stainless-steel bracelet. Elegance and excitement for each design.
