Aqua Not
The introduction from Patek Philippe for their new sport chronograph came as quite a surprise, not because of the continued brilliance in design and function, but in the striking orange color. Bright orange accents showcased on the dial, coupled with the bright orange strap has certainly opened eyes to the brand. Is the brand trying to appeal to the younger generation, or just bringing new life with color to the collection. The Aquanaut 5968A has some recognizable features, the automatice flyback chronograph Caliber CH 28-520 powers the timepiece, combining a classic column-wheel control with the more modern vertical disk clutch. The design prevents the chrono hands from bouncing and rebouding when using the stopwatch, and keeps the watch nearly friction free.
Building Character
This new Aquanaut is now the largest timepiece from the brand, 42mm, and is designed with a beautiful steel case, the hallmark gently-rounded octagonal bezel and gorgeous alternating satin and polished finishings on the surface and flanks. The water-resistance of 120 meters is ensured by the screw down crown and extra secure with the border on each side of two elongated chronograph pushers. There is a seamless transition for the sloping lugs into the strap. The graduation of the light to dark gray dial really embraces the embossed pattern of the Aquanaut, and using the Arabic numerals, white gold indices, and some other exquisite additions makes this timepiece spectacular. Those additions for the Patek Philippe Aquanaut 5968A include a oversized 60-minute chronograph-counter subdial sitting at 6 o’clock and just shaped to perfection as it hugs the octagon shape of the bezel. The contrasting orange highlights provide that touch of character, a personality for the chronograph indications, the central second hand, the 1/4 second hashmarks and the hand and indices on the subdial. There is a date that appears in a small window at 3 o’clock and the watch is highly resistant to abrasion and wear. The timepiece seems unaffected by the elements, saltwater, UV radiation and extended exposure to the sun just brighten the look.
Orange Is The New Black
The color combinations that really are striking on the timepiece play the black/grey dial against the bright orange strap, but of course for those more conservative folks there is a black strap option as well. If you are looking for that sportier look, then you will value the orange strap as it really makes the orange accents stand out. This design also is a debut for the new very clever fold over clasp and features four independent catches making opening and closing certainly secure. The Patek Aquanaut 5968A Orange Strap is one that you want to experience so you can embrace the fun, the flair, and the functional.
