A New Beginning
Taking a page from the archives, Rado has re-introduced the Captain Cook limited-edition Bronze Patina-Inspired Dial 37mm Watch. While not quite as obvious as other details, the timepiece features the red anchor that has been used to designate the automatic watch for the brand but now done with an actual Ruby background. This was done by the brand back in the 1960’s and now being used once again. This release is limited to 1,962 pieces and includes a travel pouch and a NATO strap and steel Milanese bracelet, as well as a strap-changing tool.
The Backstory
Names after the famous British explorer, the original timepiece was released in 1962 in limited quantities. The production on this piece was numbered at 8000 during the lifetime. The brand was not known for producing dive watches, but more the sleek ceramic dress pieces. So when this timepiece was reborn it was quite the surprise. The patina does provide the vintage look, and the red numeral date wheel is quite quaint. The anchor logo swivels as the watch moves which is another brand trademark. Sitting high above the dial is the box-shaped crystal and while this one is made of sapphire rather than acrylic, it is one of the only modernizations. Staying true to many of the vintage aspects of the timepiece and of course the 1,962 production pieces pays homage to the original release date.
Vintage Modern
The Rado Captain Cook Bronze Patina-Inspired Dial 37mm Watch does provide the vintage aesthetic and uses the scratch-proof ceramic bezel they are known for. The packaging that includes the second strap is really a great draw. These strap options provide the NATO strap for weekend fun or play, while the Milanese adapts for the after work dining and drinks. From ease to elegant, this timepiece transcends like the original. The movement inside has not changed, still using the caliber C07, the Swiss powerhouse that gets an 80 hour power reserve and operates at 3 Hz. Rado has provided a very exciting addition with this timepiece, it is appealing for size and versatility.
