When Kimi Raikkonen won SPA 2009, the Belgium Grand Prix at the podium he was found wearing the TAG Heuer Grand Carrera with Silver dial and bracelet. There is an unmistaken connection between the car lover and the watch lover. The watches though smaller in size came much earlier that the cars and have been with us now more than 400 years. The cars are new. Both are synonymous with wealth and luxury as early watches and cars have been the possessions of the rich. The re-launch of the model in 2013 has been a refreshing occasion welcomed by the sport lover as well as the watch lover.
The re-launch of the model certainly witnessed some changes but the core strength of the piece is the celebrated Tag Heuer’s caliber 1887 movement, an in-house production of great reliability. It is a chronograph watch of 43 mm case size with four variants to choose from, bracelet or strap and two dial versions. Another version of the same is the racing chronograph with a black coated titanium case. There are some exciting innovations like the replacement of the traditional aluminum bezel with a ceramic one which certainly more scratch resistant and has better glossiness, though a matt version also is available.
Instead of going for a new timepiece Tag Heuer decided to re-launch an existing one for the 50th anniversary. Certainly Tag Heuer wanted to bank on the success of the Carrera versions which the world loved over the years with an array of celebrities proudly owned. Nothing succeeds like success. Apart from F1 Drivers Lewis Hamilton, Heikki Kovalainen, Kimi Raikkoren , the galaxy of TAG Heuer include golf superstar Tiger Wood, Maria Sharapova the tennis legend, Ines Sastre the ace model, Hollywood superstars Leanardo DiCaprio,Brad Pitt and Uma Thurman and Bollywood icons Shah Rukh Khan and Priyanka Chopra. TAG Heuer is today the meeting ground of sport and glamour.
